Day 59 - Chapter 2

I remember Ate Tin telling me about her Jewish employer. The man has constantly been questioning the genuinity of the bible and my Ate has never felt so challenged before. I was appalled by what she said when she told me that the man actually did not accept the fact that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in a stable and he grew up in a simple family with His human father, Joseph, raising Him up as a young carpenter. He said that Jesus Christ should have been born in a palace, well-educated and prominent. Philippians 2:6-8 say otherwise:

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.  And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross.

This was done so Jesus could identify with the poorest and weakest among us, especially the spiritually poor and weak. I stand in awe of Jesus who demonstrated such humility. It humbled me all the same and made me think that surely He came to seek and save not those who already belonged to Him (spiritually rich) but those who are lost and are yet to be found (spiritually weak).

Just imagining the Son of God who breathed the same air as I do now, did "humanly" things like eating or reading a book or even feeling "human" emotions excites me. God loved us that much that He allowed His Son to experience humanity and suffer for humanity, the King who knew no suffering at all, was humbled to death on a cross.

Now to the non-believers, they know nothing and will know nothing unless they open their hearts to Him. Jesus was humbled for our sake. He knew no sin but He became sin (2 Corinthians 5:21) and died to serve as an atonement for the world. The Son reconciled us to the Father and the moment we understand the humility of Christ is the moment we see why we became Christians and why we still live to this age.
